             COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT

Jeep Expeditions members are required to have a vehicle mounted CB radio so that everyone in the group can be in constant touch. From chatting about the history of the trail you are on, to advising the group of an obstacle or obstrution on the trail ahead, an emergency in the group, a breakdown in the group or the occasional "Potty Break", Communications are essential.

Many of our members have realized the a CB radio has severe limitions and three of them that come to mind is they are low power (4 watts), they have limited range (been on a group trail ride already when the Jeep in the front had problems talking to the Jeep in the back and vice versa and at best you might get out a mile or two on the trail) and they quality of the transmission (how well you can hear the other person) is in many cases poor. We don't use hand held radios like the FRS radios because among other things you can't get the volume loud enough to hear them in a Jeep on the back trails. Because of this we have had over a third of our members get their Amateur Radio Licence (its so easy even a caveman can do it) and become Ham Radio Operators. The only drawback is a good Ham Radio will set you back $300 to $500.

There are other forms of Comm Gear that can be used to keep in touch with those back home (SPOT & Delorme Products) or can be used in case of a life and death emergency (SPOT and Emergency Locator Beacons) to summon Search and Rescue.

Communications Equipment Don't leave home without it! See what we've reviewed our opinion of it.

The opinions stated here are for informational purposes and are not statements made by experts (what is an expert anyway), we are just real world adventurers looking for equipment that fits our purpose and that we can rely on. We share our experience with YOU so that you can make informed decisions as to the gear you want to purchase.

CB RADIOS, Antennas, Mounts, SWR's

UPDATE: Efective January 2019, Jeep Expedition Members now use GMRS Radios for Primary trail communications. We've made this decision due to the continued poor quality and inconsistancy of CB transmission/reception, CBs questionable range and the annoying background noise that plagues CB. GMRS gives us not only crystal clear communication with Ham Radio quality but dosn't carry the expensive price of Ham or having to take a test for the license. We have done extensive testing of Midland Micro Mobile GMRS radios and have made them our recommended choice for members.
