FAST & EASY W/ LITTLE or NO PREPARATION OR CLEAN UP PLUS TASTY   !
MAKE & TAKE   -   Make at Home - Take on Trail

,
The perfect meals for short & long term camping?

For years I’ve been packing lots of food requiring lots of cooler/refrigerator space that took an hour or more of me and Carols time to prepare and then even longer to clean up. To make matters worse, I ended up with excess food to bring back home and even some waste.

We like quick and easy. We like little or no clean up. And, we like Tasty. Some of us prefer homecooked but just don't have the time or equipment to cook "homestyle" on the trail. No problem ! All you need to do is cook your favorites at home, use a vacuum sealer for storing them (which also makes a great boil in bag), freeze them until you are ready to go and keep them on ice until you are ready to cook. Your mess to clean will be at home and you will have quick & easy meals on the trail with little or no clean up.

These go from pot to table in 10 to 15 minutes.

For more detailed cooking instructions/suggestions, scroll to the bottom of this page.

What can you cook, save and bring on the trail with you? The menu items are pretty much up to you. Some things will freeze and re-heat well later, others won't. You can experiment at home by making something then vacuum seal and freeze it. A few days later put it in boiling water, heat it up and give it a try.

SPAGHETTI W/ OR W/O MEAT SAUCE, MEATBALLS OR SAUSAGE

Home made spaghetti and sauce - Make your favorite sauce (marinara, meat or meatball) let it cool then vacuum seal & freeze. Make your pasta "al dente", drain, add some olive oil and stir it in well (keeps it from sticking) and let it cool. Vacuum seal w/ a thin pat of butter & freeze separately from the sauce. Keep frozen until ready to leave on your trip and in a cooler with ice until ready to heat and eat. Put unopened bags of sauce and pasta in boiling water for 10 - 15 minutes or until hot. Let sit for a minute after removing from pot, cut open the tops and serve on disposable plates.

The Final Word

I won't fill this category up with anymore recipes hoping that the few that are here will get your creative "juices" flowing. As you can see make and take is a bit of imagination and a bit of experimentation. Many of the meals that you like at home can be prepared ahead of time, vacumm frozen then taken along to eat on the trail with very little preparation, in very little time and very little clean up.

Make and take meals require little or no prep time, are delightfully tasty, light weight & compact and very convenient. They do require some type of refrigeration such as a cooler with ice or a 12/v refigerator/freezer (a real one, not the $50 to $100 ones that only cool). You will need a vacuum food sealer like the FoodSaver Brand to seal your food in bags to freeze until you leave for camp. When ready to go put your frozen food bags into a cooler with ice and keep them cold (it's ok if the thaw out) until ready to use. Just drop one or more bagss in boiling water for 10 -15 minutes, let them sit for a minute and you are ready to eat. Clean up is a simple as dumping the water from your pot and throwing everything else away or you could burn the plastic and paper in your campfire.

You get to eat things you like and perhaps healthier foods with little or no preservatives.

Your choices are only restricted by your imagination and the ability to vacuum freeze foods that will heat up well in a boiling pot of water when you are camping and still taste good.

Cook 1, 2, 3, 4 or

more meals at once

depending on your

pot/kettle size.

How to cook and equipment suggestions

STOVE: I prefer the single burner butane stoves which you can buy online or at discount stores for as little as $10. Cans of butane are easy to carry easy to insert into the stove, safe and can last for a couple of meals. I find that butane burns hotter than propane which means your water boils faster, your food is done earlier and you are eating sooner. The equipment is both simple to use and lighter in weight than the propane equivilent.

POT/KETTLE: My choice of pots would be a stainless or blue porcelan steel 2 gallon pot. You can not only use this for boiling your meals but after you can use the water to wash up anything afterwards and/or to wash up yourself or reuse it for your morning breakfast. It's all you need to prepare your camp dinners or breakfasts.

COOKING: Bring water to a boil,  drop in unopened meals and cook 10 - 15 minutes.   Take meals out of the water with tongs.    Let the meal sit for a minute, cut open the vacuum seal bags, serve on disposable plates and enjoy!
