The CJ Jeep - Long live the "original" Jeep !

I have owned several trouble free CJ models from my 1st Jeep, a CJ5 in the early 70s, three CJ7's, two CJ8's. One thing for sure a good CJ will set you back more than a YJ Wrangler. After all they are classics and are sought after by collectors and the average Joe. My only problem with any of my CJs being originally from the "rust belt" was rust.

The cost to modify a stock CJ are going to be about the same as a YJ and very similar so rather than spend my time repeating myself, check out the YJ section for modification ideas/suggestions.

CJ8 Scramblers make an excellent vehicle for expeditions due to their longer wheelbase and gear hauling capacity but they are pricy.

Now this will ruffle some feathers but unless you already have or want a CJ get the YJ and put a CJ front end and dash on it for the classic look.

Few people will know the difference and you will have money in your pocket.

Now having said that, we have some members in Jeep Expeditions with stock CJs and some with mildly modified ones. Nothing crazy wild and all of them very capable off-road vehicles in their own right.

Some will tell you that without all of the computers and fancy electronics the CJ is a very reliable vehicle. Problems are easily diagnosed and fixed. Now that is where others will say is a disadvantage because with all CJs being close to 25 years old or older, securing parts at a moments notice at the parts store sometimes is tough. Yet the CJ model will still remain possibly the most favorite of all of the Jeeps I have owned.
The CJ in the picture belongs to "Joe" my son. This was what Joe wanted for his 16th birthday. It was purchased as a stock rust belt Jeep. Over the years the orignial tub was removed, the frame was cleaned and coated with POR and a YJ tub conversion was done on it. The current lift kit is from Rusty's Off-Road and is the 3 lift installed on it. It is currently in the process of an SOA conversion. The rubber is 35" BFGs. The D30 front and AMC 20 year have had 4.56 gearing, high strength allow axles and lockers installed. A custom roll cage inside, some Bushwacker cut out pocket flares (in PA you need to have your tires totally under cover of flares or get fined), Bestop Sunrider top and lots of other goodies. To vouch for the srength of this Jeep, I have been told by several of his Marine friends that this Jeep helped pull an armored vehicle out of deep mud at Camp Lejeune.

While this Jeep is probably set up for most anything you could encounter on the trail, not everyone needs a "complete" build like this one.
