The WJ, 2nd Generation Grand Cherokee

The WJ came about in 1999 until 2004. Again choose the 4.7 V8 and NOT the 6 cyl 4 liter for the same reasons as stated in the ZJ piece. There is an option for a high output 4.7 that became available in 2001 and these are still very good on gas and gives about 30 more ponies.

Just a few dollars more to lift than the ZJ model but a 2” budget lift with 31” tires and I have seen a WJ do very well on moderate to even difficult trails. Or you can spend thousands and go all out with one of the long arm kits but it really isn’t necessary for most off road travel.

My stock WJ has taken me thru a week in Moab and a trip along the Sea of Cortez and thru the Great Altar Dunes. Some of the Moab trails had spots with difficult ratings which the nimble suspension, the superior 4x4 system and a good spotter helped it thru with no damage or trouble. Same thing on some of the trails in Sedona that were rated difficult in the Wells book. Not bad for a stocker.

Now I have always been a fan of the Limited model. Not sure on the WJ. You see one of the standard features of the WJ is dual zone climate control. I have heard of problems with this system. Personally I do not like, it as it does not blow air as forceful as the AC on the ZJ Limited models. On a day where the temps are 115 outside this is a negative to me. You may not be as picky as I am about AC so it may not be a problem for you. I understand that there are lots of WJ Laredos out there that are equipped to the max with all the toys like a moon roof and leather but still have the standard AC system. I would watch for one of those next time.

My favorite features of the WJ is its responsive V8 and the full time 4x4 transfer case featuring QuadraDrive. This is the BEST AWD system on the market in my opinion. Even on slick rock in Moab, dirt and gravel hills in Sedona or the soft sands of the Altar Dunes did I have a wheel slip or spin. I have found no reason to invest in lockers due to this. The QuadraTracII and the QuadraDrive system is very nice.

Two other drawbacks of the WJ for overland travel, do NOT let it overheat, not for a second ! The combination of the iron engine block and the aluminum heads to not make good bedfellows. The spare tire well, bangs most everthing on the trail and if you get a flat, you have to unload your Jeep to get to it.

Again if you are looking for a soft and luxurious ride with plenty of room in your vehicle and one that you wont have spend a small fortune on, the WJ will fit the bill. Also be sure that you are buying one with a factory tow package with 2” receiver. I would also recommend one with the Overland package and the HO motor

Will I buy another WJ for Expedition use, probably not, I feel that the ZJ Grand Cherokee can be made into a better, less expensive trail rig for less money but that is something you need to decide. ZJs right now can be bought for $3000 to $5000 in nice shape and reasonable milage.
