Trip Report : Canyonlands: Maze District,  September18-23, 2009

Trip Report is Pending Completion by Trip Leader

Canyonlands National Park, a Jeep friendly place.  The Maze District, home of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  One of the most remote places in the lower 48.  Canyonlands National Park is divided into three districts.  Picture the letter Y.  The top center of the Y is the Island in the Sky district and the most famous trail is the White Rim Trail.  Russ is fond of that one.  The lower right side of the Y is the Needles District.  Jim Steve and I just got back from this area and I am planning a spring trip there maybe in May.  The lower left side of the Y is the Maze district and that is the area we will focus on this fall.  I have posted a very complete report on the planning trip we did there last fall.  It can be found in Trip Reports, PreRuns section of the Forum.

The rules only allow three vehicles per site.  I have therefore reserved two closely associated sites for each night so the total number of vehicles will be six.  Trailers can access these sites but there is one switchback which will present some issues.  We were able to get our trailers down this last spring.  There are no toilets or any other facilities and each vehicle MUST have a portable, washable and reusable toilet according to the permit.  But they sell the disposable stuff at the ranger station and I won't ever bring my portable toilet again as it is a mess when you are done going over all the bumps.  Note:  The permit has arrived so we can officially start thinking about this trip.

September 18th Arrive in Hanksville.  There are many camping options in the area and two hotels

September 19th  Drive from Hanksville to the two campsites  Cleopatras Chair and Panorama Point   20 m pavement, 46 miles graded dirt, 12.5 rock and sand = 81.5

September 20th Drive to the two Maze overlook campsites   37.5 m on sand and rock

September 21st Drive to Teapot and Sunset campsites  21.5 m on sand and rock

September 22nd Drive to Dollhouse 1 and 2 campsites.  21 m on sand and rock

September 23rd Dollhouse to Hwy 95  54 m  30 on graded dirt     total milage 215.5 miles

There is no gas or water along the way.  This last spring I took ten gallons extra from my TJ and had about five left over.  But we have added about thirty miles to the trip.  There is gas at the end of the trip at the Hite Marina.
