Here Is What WE Say About It:

In the 8 years travelling with Jeep Expeditions there are two things I’ve learned from setting up and taking down your camp every day. Owning a tent that takes 15-20 minutes or longer to set up or take down wastes precious time. And, the only shelter that sets up and takes down as fast or faster as a $1000+ roof top tent is an “instant” tent. I have done lots of research on the web before making any decisions. I have talked to owners of different Tents asking them plenty of and getting lots of opinions. I have seen the cheapest ones up close and I have seen the expensive ones up close. The tents with the lessor cost are typically knock offs of the more expensive ones.

In the past my experience with instant tents has been somewhat disappointing. My last two instant tents had flimsy poles that easily broke and impossible to replace and didn’t do well in slight winds of 15mph or so. But they did set up and take down in about a minute if you didn’t need the rain fly. Unfortunately because of their frailty, they never lasted more than a few nights of camping.

I've gone thru 6 or 7 "Brand X" tents in the last 4 years. Searching for a new instant tent, I came across the Coleman brand. Having used a variety of Coleman camping gear over the years their quality has never been a issue with me. But what about their Instant Tent? My requirements for a tent are quite simple: 1-can I stand up in it to dress; 2-is it big enough for me, my fiancée, my dogs and my gear; 3-can it stand up to wind and rain?

The Coleman Instant Tent comes in 3 flavors- 4 man, 6 man and 8 man. The typical 6 man tent has a 10X10 footprint on the ground and the Coleman Instant Tent is no different. What exactly does that mean? Well I have two cotts that are about 3 feet wide and 6.5 feet long. Put two of them in a tent six inches from the walls and you have 3 feet of space between the two cotts and 3 feet of space between the foot of the cott and the tent door. Still think this or any 6 man tent will sleep 6 people in comfort? Simply stated, your 6 man tent is more of a 4 man tent at best or in my case 2 adults, two medium to large dogs and room for our back packs/go bags for our personal gear and spare clothing. Theres even room for a tent heater for those cold nights in one of the front corners or at the "head end" of the tent between your cotts.

Set up, this tent has a ceiling height of over six feet. No more laying down to shimmy in or out of your clothing. The quality is apparent with HD 150D material, it has twice the thickness of an average tent. There is no need for a rain fly as all the seams are taped from the factory putting on the typical rain fly can add another few minutes to set up so I'm not going to miss it. So how does it perform?

I use the Coleman 6 Man Instant Tent as my main tent on Jeep Expeditions, even when I am by myself. As advertised it does set up and take down in about a minute and can be done easily by one person. It actually takes longer to get it back in its carry bag. While others are still getting their tent set up, you can start your dinner before dark. I've camped with several nights of really windy weather. Once the lines were staked out, the tent has been extremely stable in 40+ mph wind gusts. We don't get much rain here in AZ and I have not used this tent in the rain but I can tell you that I used its "big brother" the 8 man tent on our 30 day Alaska trip and there was no problem with days of wind and rain.

Bottom line, the Coleman Instant Tent line of tents has survived the Arizona deserts & mountaints, Canada & Alaska and I have no doubt will continue to give me good service. I might also add that I am considering adding a 4 man instant tent for those trips where it is just me.

The Coleman Instant tent is from a company with a great reputation and a full line of quality camping/outdoor gear. It is worth your consideration. Available from select retailers like Sportsmans Warehouse, Sports Chalet, Amazon and Walmart.com.
