Here Is What WE Say About It:

In the 8 years travelling with Jeep Expeditions there are two things I’ve learned from setting up and taking down your camp every day. Owning a tent that takes 15-20 minutes or longer to set up or take down wastes precious time. And, the only shelter that sets up and takes down as fast or faster as a $1000+ roof top tent is an “instant” tent. I have done lots of research on the web before making any decisions. I have talked to owners of different Tents asking them plenty of and getting lots of opinions. I have seen the cheapest ones up close and I have seen the expensive ones up close. The tents with the lessor cost are typically knock offs of the more expensive ones.

In the past my experience with instant tents has been somewhat disappointing. My last two instant tents had flimsy poles that easily broke and impossible to replace and didn’t do well in slight winds of 15mph or so. But they did set up and take down in about a minute if you didn’t need the rain fly. Unfortunately because of their frailty, they never lasted more than a few nights of camping.

Looking for a new tent for the 30 day Alaska Jeep Expedition I came across the Coleman brand. Having used a variety of Coleman camping gear over the years their quality has never been a issue with me. But what about their Instant Tent? Would it hold up on a 30 day trip? My requirements for a tent are quite simple: 1-can I stand up in it to dress; 2-is it big enough for me, my fiancée, my dogs and my gear; 3-can it stand up to wind and rain?

The Coleman Instant Tent comes in 3 flavors- 4 man, 6 man and 8 man. Simple enough, 8 man it is. If a large tent can set up in a minute or less, holds up in wind and rain and gives me good service then the smaller tents should do equally as well for someone not needing the extra room. Set up this tent and it is as big (14x8) as a small bedroom in an average home, big enough for two queen airbeds with a ceiling height of over six feet. The quality is apparent with HD 150D material, it has twice the thickness of an average tent. There is no need for a rain fly as all the seams are taped from the factory. So how does it perform?

I used the Coleman Instant Tent on the 30 day Arctic Jeep Expedition. As advertised it does set up and take down in about a minute (see the video) and can be done by one person. It actually takes longer to get it back in its carry bag. While others are still getting their tent set up, you can start your dinner before dark. We had several days of wind and rain on the Alaska trip and the Instant Tent performed well. Once the lines were staked out, the tent was extremely stable in 30+ mph wind gusts. One night we had everyone in the tent out of the rain watching a video about the Alaskan Highway (I know roughing it with a large screen laptop, DVDs and stereo speakers).

Bottom line, the Coleman Instant Tent survived Canada and Alaska and will continue to give me good service. I might also add that while I still use the 8 man tent from time to time, when it is just me or we don't have our doggies with us, we use the Coleman 6 Instant Tent, which I have also reviewed in this section.

The Coleman Instant tent is from a company with a great reputation and a full line of quality camping/outdoor gear and worth your consideration. Available from select retailers like Sportsmans Warehouse, Sports Chalet, Amazon and Walmart.com. See this tent here: At the Amazon.com web site...
