To provide comfortable and flameless warmth, the Coleman SportCat Catalytic Heater is a good choice. The catalytic propane heater delivers flameless heat to keep you warm during winter weather. It provides you with 1500 BTU, so that it can work up to 14 hours with the help of a single 16.4 ounce propane bottle. A handle is provided with an excellent grip for convenient carrying purpose. The base of the portable catalytic heater provides rigidity to the entire structure. You can easily anchor it with ties to most surfaces with the help of built-in eyelets. It can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Decisions, decisions. There are so many different tent heaters out there from big to small, propane and butane. There are more of the smaller varieties and the majority of them are propane. So, what do you do? Does this little heater from Coleman fit the bill or is bigger better? Coleman makes several tent heaters but they are difficult to impossible to find on their website. I got this one online for under $50.

I just happened to have 6 popular models of tent heaters in my camp supply and having used them all, I'll let you know which one or ones are my favorites. .

This was the third tent heater that I've purchased. Why, because I am always looking for the best equipment that fits my needs for my camping gear and I HATE a cold tent! This Coleman heater takes up less space than most other heaters in your Jeep and tent. I have a few concerns with this model as it seems easy to knock over (the same concern I have with the Coleman BlackCat and the Little Buddy heaters) and even with built in safety features, even Coleman on their website says "Heater should never be used while sleeping". YIKES! They don't trust it either??? Actually they are just protecting them from law suits because everyone knows about the only purpose for this heater and the reason why people buy them is to keep their tents warm.

This Coleman heater is very similar to the other Coleman heater and the Little Buddy heater that I've also reviewed. Size, and general style and features compare fairly well. However the heat output is less than half of the other two small footprint heaters (Little Buddy and the Coleman BlackCat). This could be a big difference on a cold night in a bigger tent. The advantage though is that since it has a lower BTU output it uses less propane and will last all night long. It kept a 10x10 tent fairly warm all night long on a single 1 lb. bottle of propane.

My ONLY concerns with this heater is that it can be prone to tipping over and probably more so in a smaller tent with two people and gear. Sure it has a safety shut off and O2 depletion sensor and it has an 8" base but it will tip over if lightly kicked (I tried it on purpose). Even if it does shut off (and it did when I knocked it over) then there is the question of it still being very hot and could it catch someting it falls against on fire. Or worse, what if it doesn't shut off? Things like that are known to happen. Perhaps I look for the worst thing that could happen camping, I'm a safety freek I guess.

I'll admit, my testing is NOT scientific but it was real world. You don't need a lab to see how and if things will work for you, if they work when you are camping when they should work and work right then that's really all you need to know.

So am I happy with this heater? Well I am satisfied with the heat output. It does the job they say it will which is an important consideration. It will keep you comfortable on a cold spring or fall night (or even a winter night) and in a small to medium tent. Again, my concerns are safety related and then all of those concerns probably have an extemely low chance of ever happening. If the tipping over thing concerns you, the Buddy Heater and the Big Buddy heater should probably be on your shopping list. With that in mind it is a product you probably should not buy.

Bottom line is I don't recommend this heater for two reasons: 1. The heat output is the least of all the units I've tried and 2. I am concerned with the safety issues I've already addressed (and Coleman says don't sleep with this unit running).
