Here Is What WE Say About It:

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use some type of lantern when camping. Lanterns give out more light than a flashlight over a larger area and come in “white gas/fuel”, propane and battery operated models.

Decisions, decisions. With so many different Lanterns out there from big to small, propane, butane, battery and a few rechargeable what do you buy? The majority of them seem to be propane but with propane, butane and battery operated, there is an ongoing cost. Propane, butane, wicks and batteries all cost money and not just once but for as long as you own them. So, what do you do? Will a rechargeable LED lantern work for you?

I own three lanterns for camping, 2 Coleman Northstar lanterns and 1 Coleman Rechargeable LED lantern.

Now as far as propane lanterns go, there is nothing better than a Coleman Northstar, it will light up your camp with its 1543 lumens and turn night inot day but, I won't use it or any other gas lantern in my tent due to the dangers of fumes in a closed area and potential fire hazard. For my tent, walking around camp or even scrounging around in my Jeep for something, I prefer an electric lantern.

Battery operated models are the safest and easiest to use but don’t give off lots of light. They also largely inefficient due to the power requirements of conventional light bulbs and the charge available in the battery. The new Coleman LED Rechargeable Lantern changes the rules. It’s not only safe to use in your tent but in the brightest mode, it is a close rival the light output of the average gas and propane lanterns. And against a battery operated lantern with a conventional bulb there is no comparison as this lantern blows them away!

Before I got my Coleman Rechargeable LED lantern I had a small battery operated lantern for the tent. It was a typical incandecent light that put out a yellowish dull light and every couple of times out or sooner, it needed replacement batteries. Worst yet, if it died on you in camp you were S.O.L. without spare batteries. Now to the rescue Coleman offers their rechargeable LED lantern. As far as LED lights go, it has respectable 145 lumens. It's more than bight enough to walk off into the dark or from your camp site to the latrene or camp fire, on high or low it's perfect for the tent and if you've got a few kids that are afraid of the dark, it gives off a nice little glow in night light mode.

How about the battery? The first camping trip the battery lasted all weekend (2 nights) without being recharged. It worked just as good the second trip out after sitting a few weeks. The high power LED “bulb” uses very little power so the battery seems to last "forever" between charges. Coleman defines "forever" as 5 hours on hight and 10 hours on low. They don't say how long on night light mode. But just in case, it comes with both AC and DC charging cords that store in the base of the lantern.

So am I happy with this light? Absolutely! It works well and could be your primary light for your camp. Best of all, no batteries to buy, EVER! My ONLY complaint is that there is no protective carry case to protect the lantern. However, there is probably some Coleman soft case for lanterns that will work well for this lantern and I will be looking for one.

Bottom line is this would be my 1st choice for an electric lantern. It is fairly compact and will meet your average lighting needs at camp. It will last all night long and more on low or over half the night on high. Plug it into your Jeep the next morning and it will be ready for the next night. It is safe to operate, and best of all no future costs for fuel, wicks, bulbs or batteries. Give this one a blue ribbon, WINNER !
