Here Is What WE Say About It: Equipment Image

Over the past 10 years or so I've had the opportunity to use more than a dozen tents from several manufacturers in all shapes and sizes. One thing I learned fast was that I like a larger tent that I can stand up in and is quick to put up and take down. So I went from those tents that you struggle to put poles together and run them thru tabs on the tent to tents usually referred to as "instant" tents.

All of the instant tents I've tried out and used to date have been the typical nylon type material with jointed fiberglass poles. I've always been fearful that the joints on these tents would eventually break and I'd be stuck with a broken tent. Some tents had fabric so thin that in a wind, the desert sands would come right thru the fabric, others that leaked like crazy in the rain, even a light rain and one that nearly folded over on top of us in a windy night. All of these issues are due to companies compromising quality to keep prices low. So my question is, does anyone make a tent out there that doesn't compromise?

This past weekend I may have found the tent I have been looking for. It is the Black Pine Sports Pine Deluxe 6-Person Turbo Tent and it is without a doubt the best quality tent I've ever used! You know as soon as you pick it up that this tent has substance. It weighs in around 50 lbs, double the typical "poly" instant tent. Once you begin to set it up, it will be well evident that the weight is due to the quality of the materials.

Set up is fairly easy and I did it by myself in about 5 minutes. Sure it only takes a minute to set it up but it takes about 4 minutes to "stretch" out the floor and stake down the corners. The rest is simple. I should mention that if you decide to use the rain fly, you can add a few more minutes to the set up. The Turbo Tent comes down just as fast and takes about 5 or so minutes to fold up and pack it back in its heavy duty carry bag.
I'll start with the walls of the Turbo Tent. 150D cotton/poly rip stop canvas. Probably doesn't mean much to you but compare the feel to your friends tent next to you. You will be amazed at the difference. It looks and feels like a quality canvas tent on the outside, the poly layer inside keeps you warm and dry. Unlike typical canvas tents, this "hybrid" material is half the weight with twice the strength. As an added bonus, this tent has a privacy membrane that keeps what's in the tent, in the tent. Even with a light on, this feature will block shadows and keep inside images from showing outside.

We've been in tents before where wind, dust, rain and sand came right thru the tent making camping miserable. There is no doubt that the cotton/poly canvas construction that not only will this keep out the wind sand but it will be pretty much waterproof too, especially with the rain fly installed.

Speaking of the rain fly, it's referred to as oversized with a large awning. I didn't use the rain fly this past weekend, there was no rain in the forecast. However, if you take the average rain fly from the typical 6 man tent and compare it to the Turbo Tent's rain fly, the high quality of materials again shows. This rain fly weighs in probably five times as much as those of "brand X" and made of the same heavy duty cotton/poly canvas.

The screens are also heavy duty as are the zippers. The floor is a quiet nylon material that doesn't make "crinkle" sounds when you move around on it and the "bath tub" style floor will keep out the puddles of rain around your tent in the case of a storm.

The attached aluminum poles and joints are solid and don't have the flimsy feel of the competitions fiberglass ones. When you take all of the construction features of this tent into consideration, it is no wonder that it has a wind rating of 60mph and will withstand gusts of 70mph. I know that no tent that I've used in the past could stand up to those wind speeds.

Did I say the ceiling height was 7 feet? The floor area is 10ft x 10ft. No laying down to pull your pants on and nothing claustrophobic about this tent. Some other features are it has two large side windows with storm flaps that can be zippered from the inside or out. The two vents in the roof can be adjusted for more or less ventilation via the zippered flaps and a large "D" style door makes getting in and out a breeze.

I have to make mention of the included carry bag that stores and protects your tent when not in use. From the first time picking up the tent in the bag and inspecting the bag from top to bottom, I was almost convinced that it was a high quality tactical bag and not the typical flimsy tent bag. Not only is this tent made to last a lifetime but so will the bag.

There are a few suggestions you should follow with any new tent. Always use a tarp under the floor of the tent. It will help protect the floor from damage from rocks, sticks and other potentially sharp object. Set your tent up before you use it the first time and spray it down with water. This will cause the stitching to swell up to help seal the stitching holes. If you have any seams that still leak you can apply seam sealer to further waterproof your tent.

Are there any "cons" to this tent. Not that I could see, again this is the best tent I have ever used. If there were anything left up to me to change it would be to replace the tent pegs with those HD 9" nail type ones. Although the pegs included are a bit thicker than those of a typical tent, they won't hold up to hitting a rock with a hammer assisting.

This tent is the perfect size for two adults with cots and their gear with a child or two on the floor and perhaps the family dog. If you want to put six adults in it, plan to be as cozy as putting 6 adults in a VW Bug. This is no different than any other tent rated for six people. It's the perfect size for me, my fiancée and our two dogs. She likes the roominess, how easy to set up/take down, the wind and rain proof material and most of all, she really likes the privacy membrane which helps prevent people on the outside from seeing what's going on inside.

Finally, there is nothing "cheap" about this tent. It obviously was designed and built with functionality and durability in mind with no cutting of corners to save a few dollars here and there. So if you are the type of person who demands the best and won't settle for second best, then this tent is the one for you. It will keep you warmer and dryer than any other tent you've owned. Taken care of properly, it will last a lifetime of Jeeping.

Quality does come at a cost. This is a high end tent no doubt. You can own a Cadillac or you can own a Geo Metro. Do you appreciate quality and demand the best? Then this is the tent for you. By the time you've bought, suffered thru and replaced a couple of cheap tents, you would still be enjoying your Turbo Tent for years to come with no stress or frustrations!
