Midland MXT400 High Power GMRS MicroMobile* Radio

This is what THEY say about it:
Midland MXT400 High Power GMRS MicroMobile* Radio

Image Max out your GMRS performance with the Midland MicroMobile* MXT400 two-way radio. With 40 Watts of broadcasting power, this radio is the most powerful GMRS radio made by Midland. Especially useful on massive, sprawling properties like farms and ranches, this radio utilizes 15 GMRS channels and 8 high powered repeater channels. For the best performance, use with an antenna and mount.

  • Compatible with ALL Midland GMRS Radios
  • High Power 40 watt radio for maximum range
  • Fully Integrated Control Mic
  • Speaker Mic Jack
  • 8 repeater channels for increased communication range
  • 15 Hi Power Channels (GMRS Channels: 1-7 & 15-22)
  • 142 privacy codes
  • Silent Operation
  • Channel Scan
  • Programmable Squelch
  • Backlit Display
  • Radio Dimensions: 1.6" x 5.5" x 7.3"

Here Is What WE Say About It:

The MXT400 is a Top of the Line Compact radio - $249: This full featured mobile radio is rated at a full 40 watts. Remember, the more watts the further out you can talk. With this kind of power, you can reach out and touch someone! It not only has 15 GMRS channels but also features 8 repeater channels along with 142 privacy codes. One feature it seems to be missing is NOAA radio and USB port that comes with the MXT115 and MXT275. For some of us, that isn't a big deal and if you have been suffering with CB all your life you probably didn't have it with your CB do you won't miss it with the MXT400. The display is a pleasing amber color and like the MXT115 and MXT275, the microphone is easily removable with its "CAT5" connector. The controls are well designed and easy to use.

Midland calls these radios MicroMobile* and they fit the description to a "T". They are smaller than any CB I've ever owned. Because of the size they can be mounted anywhere. For instance on a JK Wrangler, the panel below the A/C controls is as perfect place to get it out of the way. You can mount it on the dash in the center, along side of the center console or on the panel under the steering wheel using the JK radio mount by GrabarsUSA WD Automotive division, it's what I have used in my JK and I love it.

Our club used Midland GMRS radios (including the MXT400)as a test on our 6 state, 18 day, 2800 mile Heart of the West Trail. We wanted to evaluate how GMRS performed as compared to both Ham radio and CB. The MXT400 with its 40 watts of power performed as well as our Ham Radios using the 70cm band. Of the 11 Jeeps that were part of this trip, many said "and we still have CBs WHY?". More than one member said "as soon as the club goes to GMRS as its official radio, the CB gets trashed". Is it that much better than CB, you bet. Our experience was that we got much better range (several miles plus with 15watt radio) in all types of terrain. Every communication was strong, clear and understandable, unlike CB. No issues with static and interference like CB. In fact several of us compared our range using our Ham Radios then the GMRS, we found little to no difference. Bottom line everyone was elated with the performance of these radios and there were absolutely no negative comments. As a result of our tests and use of Midland GMRS radios, Jeep Expeditions has adopted Midland as it's only recommended brand of GMRS mobile radios.

The main difference we found with GMRS over HAM radio was the fact that in order to get your GMRS license there is no study course (the oourse I took for my HAM licence was a 40 hour course) and there is NO test to get a license. The license is applied for online with the FCC which took me about 15 minutes.

Greater distance with clear communications equal to 70cm Ham radio. The microphone is solid and the unit appears to be well built with quality craftsmanship. If you want the highest power, the most range and a well designed radio with a budget of around $250, with the added convenience of a solid radio in a compact package, this is your radio. As with any radio used in an off-road vehicle, make sure you install an external speaker and a fixed antenna like the Midland MXTA11 which is tuned for GMRS and will give you a 6 db gain.

So you still have a CB? Why ?!?!?!?
