Equipment Reviews: GRANITE WARE COOKING POTS

Here Is What THEY Say About It:

Granite Ware 12 quart and 15.5 quart pots Equipment Image

The Granite Ware 12 and 15.5 qt Pots are made of a carbon steel core for strength and durability. Porcelain is fused to the steel of this pot producing a non-porous, inert glass surface that is naturally nonstick. It is designed to distribute heat evenly while also preserving the natural taste, color and nutritional value of the foods you cook. You can use this Granite Ware pot to cook tamales, soups, stews and much more. The included steamer basket of the Granite Ware 15.5 qt pot is designed to keep the foods you steam from touching the water underneath. It is dishwasher safe and the nonstick surface makes this pot a breeze to clean.

  • Great for soups, stews, tamales and much more
  • Heavy-duty porcelain on steel
  • Distributes heat and cooks evenly
  • Glass surface contains no chemicals to change taste, color or nutritional value of foods
  • Carbon steel core
  • Naturally Non-stick surface
  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Made in the USA

Here Is What WE Say About It:

Equipment Image In the 8 years travelling with Jeep Expeditions I've learned alot about setting up a Camp Kitchen and cooking Breakfast and Dinners. Two things for sure is that you cannot cook without fire and unless you are cooking hot dogs or marshmallows, you need some type of vessel to cook your food in.

Two items that I have tried and used for several years are the Granite Ware 12 quart and 15.5 quart stock pots. These pots are heavy duty steel and nearly indestructable making them a part of your gear today and even 10 years from now. The style and color have that "retro" look that never looses its charm. The baked on porcelin coating/finish not only protects these steel pots from rust but it keeps them looking "new" from day 1 to day 1000 and beyond. But it doesn't end there, the glass like coating not only is non-stick but makes these pots easy to clean.

So, with that out of the way, how are they for cooking? On the 2008 Sea of Cortez Jeep Expedition in Mexico, we used two of the 15.5 quart pots with the included steamer insert to steam up 25 pounds of fresh jumbo shrimp on our first night of camping along the shoreline. Ask anyone that was on that trip, it was some of the best shrimp we've ever had. Now the pot can't take all the credit as the Old Bay seasoning and eating the fresh catch we bought earlier in the day at a local market had something to do with it. Being right there on the beach with the sounds of waves hitting the shoreline and seals barking in the distance probably added a bit to the experience.

But the 15.5 quart pot with the steamer insert can be used for much more than just shrimp, you could use it for clams, mussels, lobster and crabs. But it is much more than a steamer. You can heat up to 3 1/2 gallons of water for washing up gear or freshening up yourself after a long day in the dust. The steamer insert can be used to keep "bagged" foods that you are heating up in boiling water from contacting the higher heat of the bottom of the pot. This pot is just a great all around pot to have on any camping trip.

Now if the 15.5 quart pot is so great, why need the 12 quart pot. Well for one reason, one pot to wash in, one to rinse off the soap. The 12 quart pot "nests" nicely inside the larger 15.5 quart pot so it really doesn't take up any more room than one pot. When "nested" in the larger pot, the space between the bottom of both pots can be used to store paper, plastic or Granite-Ware plates. Then to complete the "package" your 8 cup coffee pot will store nicely inside the 12 quart pot.

For the most part, these are the only two cooking vessels that I carry anymore for camping. Most of the foods that I take along with me anymore are quick and easy, boil them in their containers or bags to heat up and then eat. No fuss, no muss, no clean up. Other than steaming the occaisional ears of corn or seafood on a trip, I only need hot or boiling water to do all my cooking and cleaning with. As a result, I use the 12 quart pot more than the larger one but both of them make the trip with me every time I head out for another adventure.

Bottom line, these pots are well made and will last a lifetime. You can see similar items used over 100 years ago by pioneers in antique shops that are still in great shape and who knows, 100 years from now, one of my pots might be for sale at the local antique boutique. Seriously though, these Made in America pots are top quality and will give you many years of good service. I highly recommend getting the pair for your Camp Kitchen. Where to buy? You can find these just about anywhere but you won't find them at a better price than your local Walmart or Walmart online.
