Here Is What WE Say About It

GPS units aren't perfect as I have found out more than once. The 1st time our GPS units fail us by not showing trails was on the Devils Highway. The trail disappeard on the GPS and we ended up at a 3 way fork. We kept the bulk of our 30 Jeep convoy at the desert intersection and sent 3 Jeeps out as scouts. We found out that the trail to the left led into Mexico where there was NO fence and no signs, bad news we were all armed and fortunatly our Jeep that crossed the borded realized it within a few miles and turned back around. Another of the Jeeps ended up at a box cayon with no way out and the third Jeep found the right trail, after we found when one of our guys produced some USGS maps of the area that showed us the way out.

The second time the GPS units showed trails that weren't there and trails that were supposed to be there weren't. I had a Garmin and Delore GPS in my Jeep and we got lost in the middle of no where. Day turned to night and we knew about where we were but didn't know how to get back to a main road. Every road we picked using the GPS that looked like it would take us out turned into a dead end. We finally sent two Jeeps out and with us having HAM radios with the ability to communicate in the mountains and over long distances we were able to finish the trail 4 hours late.

So one of our more seasoned members, whose job in the Army long before GPS was navigation and maps, said we needed to teach out guys how to read and navigate with topographical maps to keep this from happening in the future. Back in the early 70's I had training with maps and map orientation so I was some what familiar with it. But getting maps and remembering to bring them with you on a trail ride or trip was the obstacle. After all if you get the big USGS topo maps, it could take several maps just for one area.

Enter the Delorme GPS Atlas and Gazetteer. This is a nice sized booklet available for each state that contains Topo maps much like a road atlas. Now having an atlas might not be enough. You need to know how to read maps and also have a decent navigation compass. The newer versions seemed to cut down on the scale which gives them less detail. While they aren't as detailed as the large USGS Topo Quads, they will fill the need and are compact, easy to use and you can leave them in your Jeep for the next time. At about $20 they should be one of tools you have every time you leave the paved road.

My suggestions to Delorme. Go back the the more detailed "older" version of the Atlas and up the scale to what it was. Make the Atlas spiral bound and laminate the pages. Now if you have to charge $70 per state like your Main laminated book, your sales will be lack luster but if you can give us a book in the $35 or so range, there would                                                                                                               be a lot of happy buyers.
If you sign up to receive emails and special offers on the Delorme site, they will tell you when a new product or a sale is going on. It's easy to miss but if you scroll down their home page to just above the "footer" of the page you will find a place to put your email address on the left side.

Let me just give you one bit of advice. Delorme puts these on sale several times a year for up to 50% off.
